Something different

Il Leone Alato

After months of work and great effort, ‘The Winged Lion of Martalar’ was unveiled in August 2025.  Located in Fratta di Tarzo, it is a historic symbol of Venetian identity. Crafted from over 3,000 pieces of tree roots felled by Storm Vaia, it is the largest wooden lion in the world, standing over 7 metres tall and 10 metres long.

The work embodies the values of strength, protection and justice of the Most Serene Republic. Long an emblem of the lagoon city and the entire Veneto region, the winged lion is linked not only to the figure of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice, but also to the region’s cultural tradition.

Storm Vaia in 2018, which struck the Alps and vast areas of northern Italy, left a deep scar on the landscape and local communities. The artist Marco Martalar chose to salvage the fallen timber, transforming it into a work that bridges the past and the present: what was destroyed is reborn as a symbol of resilience and hope. To strengthen the connection with the local area, the artist used waste wood from vineyards to create the lion’s mane, thus forging a symbolic fusion between nature and local culture.
